Overall: Perhaps not a stand out year for cinema, but a year that saw some rejuvenation from relatively fresh blood in the US and a few established names that continue to push themselves hard. Also maybe my favorite grieving scene: Rooney Mara eating an entire pie.

While 3 Billboards was excellently crafted, I found it problematic for a number of reasons. However, I totally agree with Blade Runner 2049. That was exquisite. Also, Get Out: an excellent little horror film on it's own, but outside the vacuum of "just watching a fun movie", it becomes a groundbreaking masterpiece, greater than the sum of it's not-insubstantial parts. Of all the films of that year, I think it's the most likely to be studied and analyzed and taught for decades to come.
